- Holbrook Hotel
-- Ulysses S. Grant,
Benjamin Harrison, James A. Garfield and Grover
Cleveland slept here; so did "Gentleman Jim" Corbett, the
famous 19th century "bareknuckles" boxer, along with fellow
boxing champion Bob Fitzsimmons.
Mark Twain, Bret Harte, Lotta Crabtree and her friend, the infamous Lola Montez and the equally infamous Black Bart.
The dining here is par-excellence, reminiscent of the finest
New Orleans dining establishments. If you like your atmosphere
rich and drenched in history, you are going to really enjoy
the Holbrook. You can check out their menus on the Holbrook website, which lives up to the excellence we have come to expect from the world-famous Holbrook Hotel.

people.
- Tofanelli's
-- I have eaten at Tofenelli's since the day it opened more
than 20 years ago, and the food and service are still
unexcelled. Heartily recommended for both food and local
atmosphere. Most Tofanelli first-timers end up
moving here because we have many uniques, and Tofanelli's
is certainly one of them!
Their recently remodeled Atrium is a pleasure for great
dining!
- Java John's
-- If you want your coffee like the locals get it, go here;
this is the equivalent of the truck stop or donut shop where
the locals go, so it's a great place to meet the locals!

- Posh Nosh Deli

- Friar Tuck's Restaurant & Bar
-- Hosts Greg & Rona Cook are great! Not to be missed! Catacomb Dining room is incredible, and so are the food & wine from their fabulously stocked wine cellar!
I have tried their Swiss & French Fondues, and they are excellent. Also of note are their Char-Broiled Grill -- That'd be Steaks, Filet Mignon Cuts, FRESH Seafood Specialties of the House, plus Rack of Lamb, Ribs and their Nightly Dinner Specials which reflect today's choicest picks!

- Szechwan Restaurant
-- Spicy Hot Szechwan the way you like it -- not greasy, not oily, just doggone hot! Also a variety of non-spicy delicacies of Chinese Cuisine.
I have eaten at Szechwan over 200 times and love it more each time I go back there. The people, like almost everyone you meet in this friendly little Victorian Town, are just incredible. You will love them and cherish this little gem of a restaurant (little? we had a banquet of over 100 in there several times).
149 So. Auburn, Grass Valley, CA. Phone 530-272-5282.
- EarthSong Market & Cafe
-- The Vegan's Paradise, there is no better or more enjoyable market shopping than at EarthSong, and it's right next to SPD
so you can get the fishing, hiking and camping supplies while
you're there!
Absolutely the Mecca of Vegans! I shop -- and treat myself to their inexpensive but great vegetarian food all the time, and have since they opened 'way back in the XXth century, 1978 to be exact, but of course nobody there knows me as "Gourmanderie", so I can keep my reviews as objective as someone with a 42" waistline can possibly be....
- National Hotel
-- No trip to Nevada City would be complete without sampling the Victorian Atmosphere of the National Hotel, one of our most important and impressive landmarks, right in the Heart of Nevada City.
Established in 1852, the Hotel has hosted every famous and infamous character of the '49er Gold Rush! You can see folks strolling by out their windows which look directly onto Broad Street.
